Scott AFB is a wonderful base and it’s an awesome area for families. I grew up in the area and lived there twice as a military brat and spouse and would move back in a heart beat! There is so much to do with the kiddos like parks museums a great zoo historical landmarks river boats water parks theme parks sporting events etc. There’s plenty for adults to do as well with tons of shopping on both sides of the river as Scott AFB is 30mins away from St. Louis which has a lively bar scene as well as the Anheuser Busch Brewery you can tour.

The area also isn’t particularly expensive so it is a good place to lay down some roots and buy a house or a few acres (as my family plans to do). The base usually has quite a few job openings for spouses and teens the NAF and Government (USAjobs) pay the best on base. There is a medium size BX and Commissary on base both are alright. No movie theater anymore plenty food places on and off base great outdoor activities like camping hunting boating off-roading etc.

Housing on base is newer construction with tons of amenities in each neighborhood and gated as some housing areas aren’t actually connected to the base. Schools are great in the Mascoutah District the Belleville School District could use some improvement especially the high schools but if you choose to live in that district Belleville East is the better school as West tends to get the delinquents who get kicked out from the other schools because they offer an alternative night school. O’Fallon District is another common area people move too although that area is growing rapidly and can’t always keep up with the growth school and town wise.  Colleges in the area include McKendree Southwestern Illinois College Park University (on base satellite). St. Louis also has many colleges/universities including UMSL SLU Washington U etc.

Great Areas to live if you choose to move off base Mascoutah Shiloh New Baden Lebanon New Athens Waterloo Millstadt Red bud Nashville Troy Trenton Aviston Albers Germantown Highland Edwardsville Mt. Vernon and Sparta some parts of Belleville (although you really need to research first as crime is becoming more prevalent here) some parts of Swansea and O’Fallon to name a few.

Crime areas tend to be Belleville Fairview Heights Collinsville Caseyville Wood River Cahokia Washington Park Centreville Fairmont City Granite City East St. Louis (the areas closer to St. Louis).

Medical Care for the base is split with a limited clinic on Scott AFB and then the satellite clinic in Belleville attached to St. Elizabeth’s. There is no ER on base but there are two off base at St. Elizabeth’s or Memorial Hospital as well as many Urgent Care clinics in the surrounding area. Memorial Hospital has great care and in my opinion a better ER as St. E’s is much older and they tend to push their religious agenda on you especially if you give birth there. Great Docs in the area are Dr. Philip Chu Internal Medicine Dr. Bradley Tissier OBGYN Dr. Kimberly Carter OBGYN Dr. Joseph Silhavy Pediatrician Dr. Deryl Drum Pediatric Dentist.

Climate: You get all the seasons here including hot humid summers and snowy winters. I love Spring and Fall in this area as it becomes even more picturesque and the temps are much more comfortable.

(located in Belleville)
